| Abstract | Drama activities have had a long history in language teaching in Germany. They have been used for various purposes and employ various techniques. Today they are applied in language classes to develop pupils' oral skills, to work with literature and to promote intercultural understanding. It is increasingly obvious that drama activities have always been used to focus on subsidiary goals, such as "fostering self-esteem and confidence" and "facilitating the formation of a bonded group, which learns together" (Malay/Duff 2005: 1f) as well as meeting teaching objectives in the fields of political and social education (e.g. Antigewalttraining) and the learning of foreign languages. This has been critizised throughout the development of "Darstellendes Spiel" (drama) as a separate subject at German schools. Today the idea of drama as a CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) subject again poses the problem of the relationship between theatrical and language learning. The paper argues that only by stressing theatre as an art form within a CLIL subject can this special kind of teaching produce a meaningful result. (Verlag, adapt.). |
