| Abstract | Extensive bilingual courses which have been in existence in Germany for about 35 years now are a genuine grass roots movement, in the sense that the development of the curricular concept was heralded (in its early days) mainly by classroom practitioners. Over the years the approach has seen functional differentiation, e.g. towards bilingual modules or temporary enrichment courses at both the lower and the upper secondary school level. The range of 'bilingual' subjects taught in a foreign language has increased, and there has been a significant shift from French towards English-medium content teaching. Since it is now widely accepted that the subject-matter and the foreign language have a joint curricular role, the concept needs a second theoretical foundation on which to base the various approaches which have sprung up under the term of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The article summarizes both the history of the approach in Germany and the parameters requiring further didactic research and development. (Verlag). |
