Abstract | Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has become enormously popular in Europe during the last decade. Whereas in the middle of the 1990s CLIL was looked upon as something almost exotic, nowadays this new integrated pedagogical approach has been implemented in almost all countries of the European Union and in other European countries as well. In his contribution the author tries to give an extensive overview of CLIL in the European context. His survey is based on a number of recent reports, two of which were published only a short time ago by the European Commission and the Council of Europe. The following aspects are discussed: the countries in which CLIL has been implemented, organisational and administrative aspects of CLIL, aims, contents, methodology, assessment, teacher training and problems related to this new approach. At the end of the paper the author addresses the new lifelong learning programme (LLP) of the European Commission and what it has to offer to promote CLIL. (Verlag, adapt.). |
