Abstract	Four different didactic approaches to first reading and writing instruction are investigated as to their effects on the reading and writing proficiency of a total of 187 third and fourth grade pupils. The two basal language approaches teaching decoding and encoding strategies led to similar pupil achievement as the two methods following a language experience approach. The knowledge acquired by employing the latter, however, showed to be less stable. This result is corroborated by other studies investigating the reading and writing acquisition process of poor students. Reading motivation and general parental support concerning scholastic achievement correlated significantly with pupils' reading and writing proficiency. (DIPF/Orig.).
