Abstract | The integration of immigrants is becoming increasingly important, particularly in light of the changing age structure of the host society and of the non-native population. The most important factor and the key to the process of integration is language. The federal state therefore provides integration courses, sponsored by the Federal Office since 2005, which are composed of a language course and an orientation course with set standards and goals. However, integration can only be guided by means of policy and law; the actual achievement of integration must come from the society itself. Germans and immigrants alike must therefore approach each other with more openness and try to get to know more about each other. Intercultural competence is becoming more and more important.
