| Abstract | Tourism is nowadays understood as a socio cultural phenomenon acting as a sound box of globalization. Education is the discipline that has most lately reacted in front of the phenomenon of tourism. Generating a tourist culture is a key component for a regional development strategy, which leads to calling for a more active presence of the university in handling this matter. To that end there is a need to enrich the theoretical and conceptual framework of tourism. To start with, conventional vs. segmented tourism, that is "new" tourism that is related to personal development, must be clearly differentiated. Moreover, as sustainable tourism should be promoted, there is a demand for the training of high level human resources. On these premises, the paper puts forward a proposal for installing a thematic domain devoted to tourism in the Los Lagos University, in the Southern X Region of Chile. (DIPF/Orig.). |
