Abstract | The article looks at the implications of the reforms of the Finnish education system in the 1970s and analyses whether they reduce the effects of the social and regional background on education. Because the Swedish-speaking monority has better results at school and at the university, as well as a more favourable socio-economic situation than the Finnish speakers, the authors decided to study the two populations before and after the reform in a bilingual part of Finland. They show that social background still has a large but lesser effect, especially for upper secondary education and that educational selection mainly takes place at upper secondary level. Furthermore, this is true for Swedish as well as for Finnish speakers. (DIPF/Orig.) |
