| Abstract | The article gives a comprehensive survey about recent research dealing with the cognitive processes; Awareness, Automatization and Monitoring in L2 Acquisition. In recent years there has been an increasing number of studies concerning these topics. Yet it seems difficult to state results and findings strongly. This is due to the interdependence of those cognitive processes. This survey therefore aims at raising consciousness for methodological problems by comparing recent research using the following criteria: firstly, the exact definition of the subject of research is a prerequisite in order to see how it compares to the subject of any research question. Secondly, research designs and operations are reviewed, as they define how characteristics of the research subject can be observed. Thirdly, measures are reviewed, as they should be in line with the operations. The survey will show that on the one hand the interdependence between Awareness, Automatization and Monitoring is not taken into account properly; and on the other hand that operations and designs are hardly comparable. Moreover, different studies utilize a multitude of different measures. The author argues for a theoretical framework or model, which would allow testable hypotheses concerning the above processes and for more comparable operations and designs. (Verlag, adapt.). |
