| Abstract | There is general agreement that attention processes play a crucial role in oral speech production. For instance, if a speaker combines words creatively to larger units, or if he is monitoring his output regarding its syntactical correctness or pragmatic appropriateness, attention resources are needed. As of yet, an attention based theory of oral L2 production is still a research desideratum. This paper therefore attempts to clarify the impact of attention on the oral production of L2 learners, especially in terms of monitoring and automaticity. A psycholinguistic experiment is proposed which manipulates the learners' attention in a 2x3 design by varying the focus of attention and the interactional setting. The resulting data may help to establish a better understanding of how pragmatic factors influence the performance of L2 learners. (Verlag). |
