Abstract | Presents a review of C. Squire's book, "Culture in Psychology." The following issues are explored the book: (1) cultural psychology as an emerging, problematic discipline within psychology; (2) the 'subjective living-out' of cultural identities; (3) the cultural formation of ethnic, racial, and gender identities; (4) the productive and destructive psychological tensions that are produced by visual representation of self; and (5) the manner in which emotions are culturally shaped and in turn, influence culture. Methodological discussions in the book focus on the role of psychologists as cultural ethnographers and their increasing analysis of language phenomena. Squire is commended for advocating the dismissal of theoretical approaches that are based on a reduction of the individual subject to either culture or nature alone. (ZPID). |
