Abstract | This article is from a special issue of "Prospects" which addresses the theme of the 46th session of the International Conference on Education (Geneva, 5 - 8 Sept. 2001), namely that education must improve our ability "to live together". The author presents results of a Civic Education Survey conducted by the IEA in the 1990s (participants were 90, 000 young people in 28 countries). The focus of the study were the questions: "What are the common features of young people's understanding of their societies and of their civic rights and responsibilities in democratic countries? How do they intend to fulfil their own responsibilities to maintain democratic political structures and civil society? What roles do schools play in these processes?" (DIPF/Bi.). |
