Abstract | The article is a part of a "recently completed international project on ' Lifelong learning: the implications for the universities in the EU' whose aim was to identify and analyse the extent and nature of the involvement of European universities in this field. It included policy analyses, the examination of basic statistics and case studies at four universities in each of the seven participating countries." The case study on Norway first shows "how the lifelong learning concept is understood in universities. Then it discusses whether universities try to satisfy every demand in the market for continuing education or keep to their mission of providing research-based education. Universities' offer of continuing and distance education is then analysed in relation to four criteria that characterise lifelong learning: new curriculum / content concepts; new modes of delivery (distance university); new access policies; new quality assurance procedures. Last, the issue of generating income in the market for continuing education is discussed. " (DIPF/orig.) |
