Abstract | The choice of a secondary school is often a crucial phase in a student's school career. This thesis investigates the availability of school choice and its organisational consequences for secondary schools in an international perspective. The relationships between choice and organisational features of schools were perceived in terms of two perspectives: the market approach (school choice increases in market mechanism in education) and the institutional approach (school choice weakens the institutional control on schools). For the purpose of this research, at a national level comparisons were made between the Netherlands, England and Scotland, as well as comparisons at a local level were performed within the three countries. The investigations have been performed by means of literature study, panel studies and comparative case studies. This theoretical as well as empirical information is used to determine whether the market or the institutional approach is best equipped to establish relationships between choice and the organisational consequences for schools.
