Abstract"Clusters have received intense scrutiny in recent years. On the assumption that regional specialisation involving interlinked activities by complementary firms and their cooperation with public, semipublic, and private research-and-development institutions creates synergies, increases productivity, and leads to economic advantages, cluster orientation became a favourite strategy for policymaking in the field of economic development. The contributors to this volume classify and develop the theoretical approaches which underlie the interrelationships between economic actors that clusters describe, and consider the implications of such interrelationships for economic growth and development. Building on experiences in empirical analysis they provide diverse methodological approaches to the conceptulisation and identification of clusters. They also address the policy relevance of a cluster approach and openly discuss the risks of regional specialisation." Forschungsmethode: Theoriebildung; Methodenentwicklung; Grundlagenforschung.
