Abstract | This educational and technical handbook is an outcome of the EVA project. EVA stands for the German term ' Europäische Virtuelle Arbeitsschule', the European Virtual Training College (EVTC). The EVA project was funded by the European Union's Socrates programme as a contribution to its support for Open and Distance Learning (ODL). The EVA project is directed at socially disadvantaged young people. It involves educational and advisory institutions in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany. With the help of multimedia PC's and networks estabilished through the Internet, the authors are trying to provide the youngsters with new opportunities for learning and activity beyond traditional educational institutions and to facilitate pan- European communication. The manual is primarily intended to help educators - being the engines of innovative pedagogical change - achieve an integration of Internet technology in an open, learner- centered teaching environment. It wants to challenge educators: to integrate the Internet in their classrooms and to cultivate an informal, learner-centered use of tools; to take new roles beyond pure transfer of knowledge as moderators of learning processes; to find useful classroom projects and common topics with other colleagues in Europe. Through the pedagogical initiative of their teachers and trainers, it aims to help young learners: to become aware of their learning interests and express them; to connect content taught with their personal learning interests and to follow self-determined learning paths with the help of multimedia instruments and communication technology; to have unconditionally positive first experiences (without lenghty software installation or overly complex programs); to learn to deal with complex environments in cooperative and socially friendly atmosphere; to overcome or eliminate technical obstacles.
