Abstract	The author discusses the East German transformation processes within higher education based on five thesis: 1. The social transformation process in which the higher education institutions are involed is a solid basis to get some movement into the pile-up of the modernization of the higher education institutions. 2. The modernization of higher education institutions requests development concepts which come from the institutions themselves. 3. The development of the profile is a hardly avoidable strategy for modernization in the competition of the higher education institutions for students, scientists, and last but not least for resources and funds. 4. Strategies for modernization have to be developed by the single higher education institutions on their own strength watching well-tried and necessary changes as well. 5. Modernization is an important possibility for higher education institutions in order to legitimate themselves facing the public. (HoF/Text übernommen).
