Abstract	The Post-16 Strategies project is an attempt to respond to the problems stemming from the disparity between the esteem accorded to initial vocational education and to general/academic education. The aspiration of young people to enter general and academic programmes has led to a pronounced and sometimes unrealistic demand for academic education. Because of the expansion of participation in post-16 education, vocational and general/academic education systems and programmes may be unable to meet the demands of coherence, flexibility and responsiveness. The project has surveyed and analysed upper secondary school reforms within and across eight European educational systems that have been or will be undertaken to raise the quality and innovation capacity of national post-16 education systems. The purpose of the project was to identify and compare European post-16 education strategies that promote parity of esteem between vocational and general education. The purpose of the study visits and transnational collaboration between the partners was to create opportunities for shared learning from national case studies and from their conclusions.
