Abstract	The future development of the Dual System will depend on the degree of conflict between general and vocational education. The Dual System will only be able to survive in the medium term if it succeeds in adapting the professional training it offers, to make it appear both attractive and worthwhile to both secondary school-leavers and employers. Germany's neighbouring countries - Denmark, France, Austria, and Switzerland - all find themselves facing similar situations. Having already completed the necessary groundwork, and carried out a number of reforms, it would seem, however, that they are sufficiently prepared. In Germany, the problem has only been tackled insofar as the state's acting partners and those in power, have both put forward proposals as to how a sufficient number of training places can be attained. The discussion is centred in this way in order to highlight a much praised characteristic of the Dual System i. e. its perceived ability to integrate school-leavers into society. Since the situation is unlikely to improve within the next few years, the need for politicians and those in positions of power to act will become even greater. (DIPF/ orig.).
