Abstract | "Our enquiry is divided into three sections. The first section sets the scene by outlining and exploring the various policies which seek to restructure public education systems through devolution of decision making.... Chapter 2 provides an account of recent education reforms which have been put in place in each of our five countries.... Chapter 3 attempts to make sense of these policies and their trans-national character.... The second section of the book looks at the consequences of the recent restructuring. Drawing on empirical research findings from each of our five countries, it attempts to identify any early conclusions that can be made about the effects of the devolved systems on key educational stakeholders". The four chapters are concerned with: school managers, changing teachers' work, classrooms and the curriculum, the self-managing schools and the community. The third section "draws together the issues and research of the previous two sections". One chapter "looks at the consequences of choice and devolution for patterns of social differentiation" (effectiveness, efficiency and equity). The final chapter looks at various ways how "the divisive affects of choice and devolution" may be avoided. (DIPF/Bi.). |
