Abstract	The author points out that unemployment rates for higher education graduates are still considerably lower than the average... But far-reaching structural changes in the labour market, economic activities and the system of occupations have led to deteriorating employment prospects for higher education graduates as well. However, these are expressed less in terms of unemployment than as unstable employment. The graduate labour market is especially hard hit by the cutting down of available positions in the public sector (education, health, social care, law). As a result of these cutbacks work tasks for employees are becoming wider in scope and extra-functional qualifications have become more important for recruitment policies. Haapakorpi describes the new profession of higher education graduates as a "multi-profession". Graduates themselves have developed different strategies in order to cope with these problems... such as making themselves indispensable to a potential employer through part-time or vacation work or by exploiting connections and private channels in order to secure employment. Also the universities have started to react. They try to help their graduates to find employment by establishing career services, increasing and broadening programmes in further education, offering interdisciplinary studies and training for entrepreneurs. Conveying practical skills and competences is becoming more and more important. (DIPF/Vorwort)
