Abstract | The article gives an overview of the main thrusts of arguments concerning debates on the relationship between higher education and employment and provides respective statistical data. The main arguments in the debate about oversupply of higher education graduates or increase of economic innovation and productivity through a highly qualified workforce are reconstructed in a historical, political and analytical approach. The authors try to verify the main hypotheses in this debate in a theoretical way by critically analysing and assessing their explanatory mechanisms and in an empirical way by testing them for their validity. There are three main hypotheses concerning the effects of higher education expansion: - underutilisation and unemployment of higher education graduates; - displacement of substitution of less well educated groups of the workforce by higher education graduates; - economic growth and innovation because of a higher proportion of graduates among the workforce.
