Abstract | This is an essay from the PIRLS 2001 Encyclopedia that has been prepared to provide a rich context for interpreting the results from IEA' s 2001 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). The contribution describes the ways in which reading instruction in the early grades is organized in Canada. It provides information about the organization and structure of the country's education system and is intended to complement the achievement results from PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study). Furthermore it gives a description of those policies and practices in the country that guide school organization and classroom reading instruction in the lower grades. Besides it outlines the policy and organizational context in which reading takes place. Focusing on primary schools, the essay also refers to teacher education and training, reading curricula, classrom organization and instruction, and assessment practices. (DIPF/orig./Ba.). |
