Abstract | [The author] quotes Rousseau, who regretted that in his age, there were no longer any Frenchmen, Germans, Spaniards or even Englishmen, but only Europeans, since they had all been educated in the same way. He goes on to show how the university developed into what he calls a "European bridge" and the role that the humanities played in this development. A key part of this function as a bridge was the principle of dialogue, which recognised the "other" - who could be a foreigner - as a partner in intellectual conversation. (DIPF/orig.). |
