Abstract | Nowadays, universities are heavily involved in literally every kind of social and economic activity in the increasingly dynamic societies. The author discusses the changing relationship between university and society from different perspectives which are strongly connected with each other. First, he attempts to contribute, from a certain perspective on governance studies, to the ongoing debate on the modern university and to look for the strengths and weaknesses of this approach for higher education studies. A second perspective is concerned with the changing role of the university as an organisation, the changing interfaces between the university and its environment as well as issues related to organisational adaptation. A third perspective highlights the basic functions of universities in education and research. Finally, questions have to be raised on the effects of changing governance and innovation regimes on the micro-foundations of science and research as well as on the relationship between the university and the world of work. Contents: From government to governance and beyond. - Organisational perspectives on the university as a moving target. - From Popper to Gibbons? Governing the scientific commons. - The trainability of employability: higher education and the world of work. - Conclusions (HoF/text adopted/St.). |
