Abstract | This chapter gives an overview of the role of the nation-state in policy and research as well as the economic and educational changes after the Second World War. It shows that substantial economic differences exist amongst countries and in particular the category labelled the Third World. These differences were maintained 30-40 years later into the 1990s. The emergence of new social and cultural movements, the rediscovery of civil society, the changing role of the national state and the internationalization of educational research, all of which resulted from or coincided with globalization are globalized.
