Abstract | After independence, many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced economic growth and a tremendous increase in literacy and primary and secondary enrolment. However, the continent suffered severely during the worldwide economic recession. Many African countries had to implement structural adjustment programs and to restructure their education systems, principally in the form of decentralization and privatization. The contradiction between globalization forces and revival of local cultures is perhaps more obvious in Africa than in other parts of the world. Economic decline and marginalization have been accompanied by religious revival and a reinforcement of the informal sector. Since the beginning of the 1980s, there has also been a decline in most components of the education systems. (DIPF/Orig.). |
