Abstract | This publication collects some of the contributions of the international seminar, organized by the OECD Programme on Educational Building (PEB) and the Portuguese Ministry of Education and held in June 1999 in Lisbon on the theme "Designing schools for the information society: Libraries and resource centres". "The purpose of the seminar was to determine to what extent the uses of information and communications technologies and the transformation of schools into community learning centres affect the demand for and the use of space in educational institutions, and more particularly to examine the changes designed to promote lifelong learning and the information society. This report is a follow-up to the Lisbon international seminar. It comprises: a preliminary document setting out for participants the questions to be debated; an article initially published in the Programme's journal 'PEB Exchange' following the seminar and summarising the work carried out; an international study by the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) on information and communications technologies and learning; and case studies and contributions relating to various countries (Australia, Austria, France, Italy, Portugal, United Kingdom).
