Abstract | "Recent developments in Europe are of considerable interest ... there has never been so much attention given to 'small' languages, to stateless cultures, to minority concerns generally. Although the focus of this essay is on multilingualism and multiculturalism in Canada, the current European context will be dealt with first." ... The author insists "that any discussion of language must also say something about the broader culture of which language is a part. Discussion of any language and culture - minority or not - is essentially a treatment of identity, but there is an obvious and marked poignancy to the matter where 'small' or 'at-risk' groups are involved.... The author illustrates the difference by the struggle for recognition by the Makah tribe and the influence of the struggle surrounding French in the case of Canada. (DIPF/orig.). |
