Abstract | Civility had been taught for centuries but it only applied to the relationships between castes in monarchial systems. But is civility conceivable in a republican context? Civility, both as politeness and the proprieties, rules the relationships between "individuals" in democracy by maintaining a safe distance between each of them. Civility, the first step in the ackowledgement of the other, is neither morality nor politics, but it allows the development of both. A degree of fundamental civility is necessary in the schooling process. It is to be acquired through "physical constraint", through rituals that accustom us to take the other into account.
