Abstract | Our understanding of conceptions such as culture, education and pedagogy, heretofore the benefactor of a long rational and humanistic tradition, is today steeped in uncertainty. How is it now possible to be informed and discriminating toward cultural issues without a universal and rationally founded model? How can one assume, in teaching, the role and responsibilites of the cultivated mentor. How does one think of pedagogy as a cultural activity? The present article is intended to animate and stimulate this interrogative process. The author attempts to lend understanding to culture shock, so inherent to the postmodern era, by redefining the meaning of a liberal education which would embrace freedom in the learning process and by examining a unitary culture in the light of contemporary hermeneutics.
