Abstract | The University of Newcastle is a highly comprehensive university in regional Australia. The ... regions served by the University are amongst the most socio-economically disadvantaged in the country. There are very low retention rates to the final year of secondary school; and poor rates of progression from school to tertiary and higher education. ... The paper explores the wide range of initiatives which have been put in place to facilitate the participation and success of people from disadvantaged backgrounds including: those from low socio-economic families; Indigenous Australians; people with disabilities; people from rural and isolated communities; women in non-traditional fields of study; and young and mature-age people who were unable to complete secondary school for a range of reasons. The paper also highlights [an initiative of people who became unemployed recently by closure of the largest steel plant in the region]. (DIPF/orig.) |
