Abstract | This paper discusses citizenship and citizenship education as they affect refugees in the United Kingdom. The first section looks at the UN definition of 'refugee' vis-à-vis its identity implications in Britain. The second focuses on nationality and notions of citizenship with illustrations from Britain, Ghana and Nigeria. Section three establishes the connection between language learning, school and citizenship in re-orientating "strangers" to perceive Britain as "home". Provisions in the curriculum are discussed. The fourth concludes that unrealistic policy provisions and immigrant fears in Britain must be addresses for the curriculum to have the desired effect on society. ( DIPF/orig.) |
