Abstract | In Germany ideological debates over private schools versus public ones are repeatedly in the center of attention. Whereas in this country private elite schools are not so common yet, such institutions have had a very long tradition in the USA. For more than a century prep-schools have been very successful when preparing children from wealthy families for being accepted at one of the top universities. Due to certain characteristic features like academic push, personal attention, coaching and committed instruction, private schools have helped a lot of less talented, "average" students to do an excellent job in their preparation for college. The advantages and disadvantages of this kind of education shall be discussed by making some references to the circumstances in Germany. (DIPF/orig.) |
