Abstract | The article is one of seven papers in the journal issue which are "a first attempt to examine the genesis of the concept of lifelong learning in a European context ... especially as it relates to the university. They focus on its historical development, past achievements, the changing legal and regulative framework and its new dimensions in the context of the ' information' and 'knowledge' society. The studies concentrate on continuing and adult education and certain aspects of training involving the universities. They are ... based on the existing literature and various legal documents and policy statements." In Spain, the rising demand for traditional higher education also led to a rising demand for non-traditional courses. "These courses have something in common: they do not lead to an official diploma and are offered to graduates or adults. In this article, we shall use the term ' lifelong learning' (LLL) for all types of non-traditional courses. First, we shall present some characteristics of the Spanish higher education system that are relevant for the discussion on LLL. We shall then discuss the main traits of university LLL in its different versions: distance education, LLL programmes (i.e. stable programmes) and LLL courses (sporadic courses to satisfy specific demands). Finally, we shall analyse the consequences of LLL activities." (DIPF/orig.) |
