Abstract	This paper uses the current Australien (Commonwealth) Government definition of tertiary education as including "the new national apprenticeship system, nationally recognised industry training, TAFE (i.e. Technical and Further Education), private training providers and public and private universities". The author describes an impressive variety of institutional settings, funding, themes and links to policy practice in higher education research in Australia. He expresses concern regarding the future of public funding for research and sees the higher education research potentials as often being to thinly spread "to allow for multidisciplinary work and major projects".
