Abstract	The author warns that the process of intellectual maturation of higher education research is at risk. The intellectual identity of this domain may be lost if research aimed to serve consultancy and policy, thereby expressing a skeptical view on whether a debate on organisational forms of research is useful for touching upon the most crucial issues of the potentials and dangers of higher education research.
