Abstract | This article focuses on the economic, cultural and political dimensions of globalization and transformation of higher education in Poland, Australia, Iran and the Philippines through the spectre of 'privatisation'. Using political, economic and cultural factors, the author presents a very original and informative qualitative analysis of the place of higher education in the global economy and the move towards privatisation. To assess the quality and academic excellence of higher education, he used the Australian Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) and National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) authoritative reviews of the education systems of over eighty countries, published as 'Country Education Profiles' series (1992-1996). In conclusion he states that the move towards privatisation tends to favour 'those who can afford the fees involved'. (DIPF/Orig.). |
