| Abstract | The debates of the early 1990s represented a shift away from public orientations to education in the previous two decades. While the authors believe that the reforms that have actually been implemented in Canada to date have been generally less dramatic than in many other jurisdictions, this has been a period of significant changes to the structure of public education and, not withstanding our arguments as to the importance of understanding the unique circumstances of school reform within each province, it is possible to point to a degree of commonality in rhetoric and the practice of reform across the provinces. In all provinces some attention has been given to most if not all of the following elements: 1. Curiculum centralization and standards testing. 2. Changes in the roles of school boards. 3. School- based management and parental involvement. 4. School choice. (DIPF/ orig.). |
