Abstract | This article gives a comprehensive description of teacher education in Austria. After preliminary remarks on the Austrian school system the authors are contextualizing Austrian teacher education characterizing its development from the sixties up to present. In the second part the system of teacher education is described according to the different educational levels: Initial teacher education for pre-primary education (kindergarten), compulsory education, "Lehramt an Hoeheren Schulen" (first and second part), teachers for vocational education. It follows the description of continuous teacher education and the impact of European Commission co-operation programmes. The third part applies to "new" needs in teacher education while the authors refer as well to the entire system of teacher education as to the sub-systems of teacher education, which is teacher education for compulsory schools and "Hoehere Schule" and to continuous teacher education. The fourth and last part discusses "new" measures for "new" needs in teacher education. Besides initial and continuous teacher education also the European Commission level is included.
