Abstract | This chapter focuses on the development of provision, in terms of the contents and methods, of the programmes of pre-service and in-service teacher education of science teachers at the Italian compulsory school level (primary school and middle school: pupils between 6 and 14 years of age). Particular attention is given to the educational strategies and didactical methodology on which this development is based. Integrated approaches to science teaching and related problems are discussed. Integrating principles, dimensions of integration and the profile of the mathematics and science teacher are outlined.
