Abstract	In selecting documents for lessons on modern history Bulgarian teachers often use memoirs. Documents of this kind allow the common threads and interrelations of the histories of contemporary European countries to be understood more clearly. Although there are few abstracts from memoirs within textbooks, teachers may compensate for this by making their own selection. In this way pupils/students may become acquainted, for example, with Winston Churchill's recollections of the founding of the League of Nations and of Stalin's personality, or with his assessments of wars. In this context the author offers some more examples for the utilization of historical and present-day documents and the respective methods in classroom work. Besides teachers in Bulgaria encourage pupils to examine statements and speeches by European politicians in order to discover specific ideas and intentions and the methods envisaged for putting them into practice.
