Abstract	The purpose of this research was to investigate inequities in the items and administration of public examinations and in the use of their results for selection purposes. The Amharic and English items of the Grade Eight National Examination and the Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination were evaluated using checklists for gender and location (urban and rural areas) bias. Document analysis, focus group discussion and unstructured interviews were used to investigate inequities in the administration of the examinations and in the selection procedures based on the results. It was impossible to detect item bias using the checklists. However, there are some characteristics that probably create unjust differences between rural and urban candidates....
