Abstract | The article summarizes the fate of the comprehensive school in the Federal Republic of Germany during the last two decades. Since the development of schools took a different course in East and West Germany after the World War II, and the new impulses given to the further development of the comprehensive school in Germany after unification the overview is presented in the following steps. 1) Comprehensive schools in the FRG - thwarted structural reform or pioneers of innovation? 2) Can education provide equal opportunity? Impacts of expansion on social selectivity in education an via education. 3) Educational expansion without effects? Overlooked and often underestimated impacts of the change in education in the FRG.
