| Abstract | This essay discusses the "what", "why" and "how" of using e-mail to foster cultural awareness and intercultural communication competence. The "what" factor is student awareness of oneself as a cultural being. The "why" factor begins with the assumption that knowing oneself as an individual and as a part of a culture and also knowing the other fellow as an individual and as a part of a culture is essential to developing intercultural communication competence. The "how" factor is related to the use of credible critical situations and coordination of learning activities. E-mail is a buzzword associated with being intercultural and international.... The focus of this essay is not on e-mail itself but on the pedagogical and research goals that it can facilitate. (DIPF/orig.). |
