Abstract | Section A: "A framework for understanding educational accountability" firstly, provides some background to help understanding the timing and reasons for substantial initiatives undertaken worldwide to increase educational accountability. Secondly, it clarifies the meaning of accountability.... Section B: "The accountability toolbox" describes a large number of quite specific tools used to increase the accountability of schools, school districts and larger educational jurisdictions, such as provinces, states and notions.... Section C: Accountability policies and practices in selected countries" is based on the concepts and ideas developed in the earlier sections.
