AbstractEgyptian education has witnessed tremendous reform efforts and tangible changes in the last few years. These events have included: the development of both primary and preparatory school curricula; a secondary school certificate (SSC) examination system: expansion in repairing schools and building new ones; the development of teacher education; and the licensing of four new private universities. It is assumed that these vital changes were based on informed decisions, i. e. that they were the outcome of educational research and a response by the decision-maker to the results and findings of that research. It is also assumed that the infrastructures and logistics of educational research are available, and that channels have been opened between the educational research institutions and the decision-makers. So this study seeks to answer the following questions: to what extent does the educational decision-maker in Egypt depend upon information, in what way, and by what means? It then focuses on three main areas: the presentation of educational information in Egypt; an examination of two examples of the role of educational research in decision-making; and reflections on the decision-making process in education. The author comes to the conclusion that Egypt should establish alternative channels for educational data, especially as the present ones are still ineffective. In his opinion, they do to really exist, neither in the lives of researchers nor in those of decision-makers. (DIPF/orig.).
