Abstract | The article first shortly describes the state of education under Spanish colonial rule and then gives an overview of the plans and reforms of public education which were developed by the US Military Government beginning from 1899. The intentions of the Americans were "to give all people an adequate education, to afford each child an equal opportunity to succeed in Cuban society." The author discussed why the effects of these reforms were so short-lived, so that e. g. in 1955 (four years before Fidel Castro's revolution) the proportion of enrolled school-aged children was only 5 % higher than 1902.
