Abstract	[There is an] intense struggle over who should control the preparation of teachers. The apparently diminishing role of universities in teacher education in the United States is seen in recent developments, including: the pressure to redesign teacher education; the struggle between those who see the need to strengthen the knowledge base of teachers against those who favor learning on the job; the need to define precisely what teachers need to know and be able to do; and the relaxation of entry standards of students entering the profession as a solution to the chronic shortage of teachers.... This book provides the definitive statement for the necessity of the university's role in the preservation and further development of the profession. It addresses the need for, and contributions of, the university, and provides guidance to that process. An essential element of this endeavor is that it is highly focused on what the university uniquely brings to the process of teacher preparation. (DIPF/orig.).
