Abstract | This report on a Socrates Project "Adult education and the museum" (AEM) comprises four parts. The first part gives a characterisation of the project itself. The second part is a selection of papers contributed to the various seminars which formed integral part of the AEM project. These are: 1. Ekkehard Nuissl: Adult education in museums: museums as "educational institutions", 2. Paolo Federighi: Redefining the role of museums, 3. Gerhard Bisovsky: Adult education and museums: opportunities for cooperation, 4. Jean-Christophe Ammann: Museums and art galleries as collective memory, 5. Laurence Tardy: The concept and practice of "cultural mediation", 6. Alan Chadwick: Museums and adult education: partners or competitors, 7. Jutta Thinesse-Demel: Emerging trends. The third part presents case studies from 15 countries as the central, substantial achievement of the project. In part four conclusions are drawn from the case studies and recommendations are given to the European Commission concerning cultural policy and in particular for the sphere of adult education/museum partneships.
