Abstract	The essay is based on the comparative study on the academic profession initiated in 1992 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.... This study can be regarded as the first serious international attempt to compare the conditions of the academic profession in its national and intitutional contexts. Using some of the major outcomes of the study the author discusses general aspects of the acadmic profession in four Western European countries (Germany, The Netherlands, England, Sweden), Japan and the US.
